External obliques
Function
It stabilizes the body and helps with rotating and bending the torso.
Description
It’s a thin muscle, but the largest of the three flat abdominal muscles and closest to the skin. Just below it is the internal oblique.
Origin
Lower eight ribs.
Insertion
Anterior half of the iliac crest, linea alba and pubic tubercle.
Internal obliques
Function
Exhaling, rotating and bending of the torso.
Description
Below the external obliques and above the rectus abdominis.
Origin
Thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest and inguinal ligament.
Insertion
Bottom three or four ribs and linea alba.
Transverse abdominis
Function
It compresses the abdomen to hold the internal organs in place. It helps with maintaining your posture.
Description
It’s below the internal oblique, so it’s innermost of the three flat abdominal muscles.
Origin
Iliac crest, inguinal ligament, lower six ribs and thoracolumbar fascia.
Insertion
Linea alba and pubis.
Rectus abdominis
Function
Flexes trunk, stabilizes pelvis during walking, keeping abdominal organs in place.
Description
It’s a large abdominal muscle that consists of eight or ten segments and it’s sometimes referred to as a six pack.
Origin
Pubic crest and symphysis.
Insertion
Costal cartilages of rib 5, 6, 7, xiphoid process.
Pyramidalis
Function
Tenses linea alba
Description
It’s a small muscles that is considered insignificant. It can be uneaven in sizem missing one or both of the sides. More the 20% doesn’t have it at all.
